365: month one, complete!
![]() |
At the end of 2010, I looked at my Flickr photostream and realized I’d hardly uploaded anything – outside of museum stuff – for almost a year.
And that’s just no fun.
So, in an effort to keep learning, I started a 365 project – and to be honest, I was skeptical it would work out. I tried a daily photo project in 2010 – but uploading a photo a day was too much. Oddly, taking a photo a day – and uploading at weekly intervals or so – is much more manageable. Still, I’m pretty proud that I made it all the way through January without missing a day! Particularly since only my macro lens is usable at the moment.*
The picture above is my favorite image from the month – though perhaps not the most meaningful, significant or memorable.
What I love about the idea of a 365 – and it’s turning out to work quite well in practice – is the visual record. I am so bad at keeping track of days, weeks, months…and remembering when and if things happened. Here, it’s all in one place.
If you’re doing a 365 – or any other kind of ongoing photo project – let me know! I’d love to follow along.
Challenges to look forward to: staying inspired | numbering correctly | figuring out how to clean a lens
Other 365s to check out: Chris Everson | Frances Parker
*A situation that will definitely teach you about a given lens’ capabilities.

This is a great project and goal for yourself and this photo looks great. I am also working on a 2011 project, although instead of photos, I am doing videos. I did manage for about a 4 day span to do a video per day, but decided to slow down so that I can really get the quality I would like. I would love for you to check them out! They are all produced, filmed, edited, “acted” (if you can call it that haha) by myself. I would love to branch out and have actors, but for the time being, I am the only person available enough to do a shoot every day or every other day. I love that one of the challenges you gave yourself was to “stay inspired.” I am constantly on the look out for inspiration so this is something I can relate to. I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Lauren, wow – a video a day! I would think a video a week would be ambitious, especially with how beautifully yours are edited. And I love your goal of exploring your progress through a blog. I look forward to your next videos!
ERIN!! You’re doing amazingly well!!! This is the year, you’re gonna’ make it all 365. You go girl.
Thanks, Katie!! I gotta keep myself psyched – and your comment is totally going in the mental rolodex. Thanks for the inspiration!
You have a Nikon, right? If so, I have a 50mm lens I use with my Lensbaby Tilt-Transformer that I could let you borrow until you get another one working. Let me know if you are interested.

Ed, that would be awesome – I would love to try out your lens! I do have a Nikon. Thank you so much for the offer!
It’s an AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D. Let me know where you can pick it up, and when!
Lovely! Also, I keep thinking this is a cupcake – way to trick me!
And I keep *wishing* it was a cupcake. The world’s tiniest cupcake…
Wait, what!? I thought it was a cupcake too!! Obviously I have a one track mind
xo
It’s actually a really small, 40 million year old fossil of a Conus shell. Sadly, we have more fossils than cupcakes around here.
We need more cupcakes.
I think anyone who lives a life surrounded by more fossils than cupcakes has an interesting life! Because you can always bake more cupcakes!
Congrats on completing the first month. I think 2010 was a sucky year for a lot of people in photography. It was for me. Most of my photos were from 2009 that took all of 2010 to show up. I set up some goals to make sure that didn’t happen again. I am doing a 52 week project with mirror project photos so I can get those back on track. They practically disappeared in 2010. And to get myself to look at my usual surroundings with new eyes I’m doing a color a month project. This month is orange and frankly I don’t think I’ve taken one orange picture yet so I better hop to it.
Look forward to seeing more of your lovely photo goodness throughout the year.
Thanks, Laurie! I really admire your commitment to photography and everything you do with the Assignment: Houston group – so it’s kind of a relief to hear you say you also struggle with it sometimes! And I LOVE your reflection shots, so I am definitely looking forward to seeing your mirror project. Do you have a set or dedicated location where all the color-a-month photos are stored? I would love to follow along with that! I really loved the mural tomatoes
